Philippians 2: 5-8 (NRSVA)

5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,

    he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

Paul calls us to share Christ’s mindset, who, though fully divine, humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross. Jesus did not thirst for power, status, or recognition. Instead, Jesus thirsted for obedience to His Father as well as love for humanity. Jesus willingly emptied Himself, taking the nature of a servant, choosing sacrifice over self-interest.

I cannot help but feel that this passage challenges us to examine our own desires.
Instead of longing for comfort, success, or control, what if we were thirsty for the things of God— for humility, service, and self-giving love?

What would the world look like if this was what we thirsted for?

The world often encourages us to seek personal gain, but Jesus shows a different way. Jesus shows us that true fulfilment is found not in exalting ourselves but in surrendering to God’s will and serving others.

Jesus’ ultimate act of humility on the cross was not a loss but a victory.

Through His obedience, He brought salvation to all who believe in Him.

When we thirst for the things of God, we step into this same path of true life.

It may not always be easy, but when it leads to joy, peace, and a deeper relationship with Christ, is that not worth thirsting for?!

Let us pray…

Lord Jesus,

You humbled Yourself for us.

You choosing obedience over comfort, sacrifice over status.

Teach us to do likewise…

Help us to thirst not for worldly success

but for a life that reflects Your love.

When pride tempts us, remind us of Your humility.

When selfish desires rise within us, fill us with a thirst for service.

May we pour ourselves out in love for others, just as You poured out Your life for us.

Lord, transform our hearts.

Shape us to desire what You desire,

to love as You love, and to live in joyful obedience to the Father’s will.

May our thirst for You deepen each day, leading us closer to the life You have called us to.

Amen.
