On the Street in the Brewery Faith Comes Alive!
There is something powerful when people are confronted with the Cross of Christ. It was on a noisy busy public highway surrounded by all kinds of people that the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth took place. Some were looking to be entertained, while others who should have been there, as his friends, were looking on from afar. Others just past by, but some stopped and stood and watched and some were changed forever.
Could it be for too long Church leaders and church regulations have removed the emotion and the engagement with cross of Jesus from public view. We have restricted and even denied the emotion and the power of the invitation to receive the bread and wine only to those and such as those who we believe, believe in the right way, whatever that means. Yet did Jesus not say, “If I be lifted up I will draw all manner of people to me”. I’m convinced that the act of Communion for some people can be and is a converting encounter with the Lord. Hence in the reformed tradition it was known as the Lord’s Supper. It is his table. And he invites ‘whosoever will to come’
Have a look at this video clip. It is a record of what happens when you take the table of our Lord out onto the street. Bridging Heven and Earth
Some walk by, without a glace, others look, stop for a moment then walk by, but some come forward ever so carefully and reverently, take the bread and drink the wine, and then walk on. Touched by the cross in that sacred moment on a busy public street. The body of our Lord Jesus Christ which was broken for them becomes a real encounter with the risen Christ.
This year I’m planning on taking the Lord’s Supper into a public house. Yes on Wednesday evening the 5th March at 7.30pm Sanctuary First is going to live stream a communion service from the Allan Water Brewery, in Bridge of Allan. We hope that a good number of the Sanctuary First Community who can will make the effort to come and join us in person, while others who can’t readily be with us in person will join us on line. There is something powerful and healing, when we receive the bread and wine, in a different context. I’m delighted that Dan the parish minister will also join me as we share together with others in this sacred act.
When the first Christians met they shared a meal and then broke the bread and received the wine, reminding themselves of the presence of the Lord Jesus continues with us daily. Let’s not forget that God still loves the world and that the forgiveness that flows from the cross still touches lives in the 21st century.
