Jeremiah 31: 3-4 (NIV)

3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:

‘I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

I will build you up again,
and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt.
Again you will take up your tambourines
and go out to dance with the joyful.

Loved with an everlasting love —

That’s awesome Lord!

Everlasting…

Forever and ever…

Ever?

No matter what?

There’s a beautiful children’s book that my own children loved by Debi Gliori called ‘No Matter What’.

A book which tells the story of a Large Fox and of the love they have for their little one named Small…

When Large says that they will always love Small, “No matter what”,

Small smiles and wonders aloud, “No matter what?”

And asks some big questions to challenge the unconditional love Large promises…

What if I was a bug, or a crocodile, or even a grizzly bear…?

But Large’s love remains resolute, Even then! Large promises.

And that’s what God promises us, love, no matter what!

But what if… we wonder…

Yes, says God… even then!

Love.

The foundations, the building blocks of life…

It’s there when all else has fallen to ruin around us,

When we look at the ashes and remains of what once was at our feet,

We can still be sure that we are loved

By the one who loves us with an everlasting love.

Everyone else may have deserted us, but still that love remains…

And it’s a love which doesn’t leave us there,

It refreshes, and renews, rebuilds…

Slowly but surely,

Bit by bit, moment by moment,

And when we are ready that love leads us out and on into new life…

Prayer:

Dreamer and Maker,

Source of light and life and love,

Thank you for the love that you have for me,

A love which holds me,

Accepts me,

Cocoons me and shelters me while

You remake

And rebuild me.

As I sit in your newly opened palms,

And survey the wonder of the world through remade and freshly opened eyes…

Cement the knowledge of your love within me,

Ground me in it,

That I might take flight, and flit through life,

Touching lightly and bringing knowledge of that love wherever I go…

Amen.
